Massachusetts Electric Deregulation
Massachusetts electric deregulation was implemented in March, 1998
opening up the state to electric choice. NSTAR, Mass Electric and Western Mass Electric Utilities participated in the deregulation and provided special discounts for the electric consumers in Massachusetts. The aim of electric deregulation is to create competition among electric power producers and to provide lower electricity rates and still
provide for a reliable source of energy in Massachusetts.
Efficiency and development of more generating capacity by electric utilities was also encouraged, thereby increasing competition and reducing overall electric rates. The electric deregulation was a success and electric
deregulation in Massachusetts continued to move in the right direction
